Sacred Pause: Discovering True Rest
Sacred Pause: Discovering True Rest
Life rarely slows down. Our schedules are tight, our minds are crowded, and our hearts quietly carry more than they should. We move from task to task, notification to notification, responsibility to responsibility until weariness becomes normal.
Yet in the middle of the noise, Jesus offers something radical: REST. Not a temporary break. Not escapism. Not avoidance. But a sacred pause; a holy moment where striving stops and trust begins.
A sacred pause is not merely silence. It is intentional surrender. It is the moment you stop trying to fix everything. The moment you release the outcome. The moment you choose trust over control.
“Come to Me”; When Jesus spoke those words in Gospel of Matthew, He wasn’t addressing people on vacation. He was speaking to the exhausted, the spiritually burdened, the ones crushed under expectation and law. His invitation was personal: Not come to a system. Not come to self-improvement. Just simply Come to Him.
This kind of rest requires trust and trust challenges our pride. All too often we believe
If I don’t handle it, it won’t get done.
If I stop pushing, I’ll fall behind.
If I let go, everything will fall apart.
But true rest in Jesus says:
God is already working.
God is already holding what you cannot.
God is faithful beyond your effort.
Rest is not laziness. It is confidence in Christ’s sufficiency. There is a difference between physical rest and soul rest. You can sleep eight hours and still wake up anxious. You can take a day off and still carry fear.
Soul rest happens when you entrust your burdens to Jesus. The psalmist wrote about being led beside still waters (Psalm 23). Still waters are safe waters. Shepherds would guide sheep to calm places where they could drink without fear.
Jesus is that Shepherd! When you pause in His presence, you are not abandoning responsibility, you are repositioning your heart under His care.
You don’t need a retreat center or a perfect morning routine. You need willingness. Here are simple ways to begin:
Stop and Breathe: Close your eyes. Take a slow breath. Whisper, “Jesus, I trust You.”
Release One Burden: Name one worry and consciously give it to Him in prayer.
Sit with Scripture: Read a few verses slowly. Let them settle into your heart instead of rushing past them.
Resist the Urge to Fix: Choose prayer before problem-solving.
Over time, this pause becomes posture. You begin living from rest instead of striving for it. When you rest in Him: Anxiety loses its grip. Pressure loosens. Perspective returns. You discover that what felt crushing becomes manageable because you are no longer carrying it alone.
Resting in Jesus does not mean life becomes easy. It means your soul becomes anchored.
A Prayer for Sacred Pause: Lord Jesus, I confess that I often rush ahead of You. I carry what You never asked me to carry. Teach me the sacred pause. Teach me to trust instead of striving. I lay my burdens at Your feet. Let my heart find true rest in You. Amen.
